December Challenge

Christmas Ornaments made from Sea Urchin shells

November Challenge

This summer, at our symposium, Clay Foster demonstrated a method of producing a two part hollow turning. This simple technique gives the turner a large opening in order to easily hollow the item.  Then Clay added a twist: he hid the glue joint using multi-axis turning and a little surface embellishment.

Your Challenge, if you accept it, is to produce a two part multiple axis hollow vessel.  Lets prove we learned something at our Saskatoon Twenty Twelve Woodturning Symposium.

September Challenge

Tops...Spin tops...finger or snap tops to be precise.

We challenge you to make finger tops as a way to start off the turning year.  These wonderful little instruments of joy are fun to make and great to give away or even play with yourself.  The challenge this month is to make a colourful finger top using some of the colouring techniques shown by Andrew Glazebrook in his demos at the symposium.  His use of colour was very creative which resulted in a very attractively coloured top.  If you didn't take in any of Andrew's demos, then simply colour your top to your liking.  We might even have a "spin off" for the longest spin time if time permits.

For ideas, there are three wonderful discussions on spin tops in the latest AAW magazine pages 23 to 28.  For members, this is the link to the first article http://issuu.com/aawwebmaster/docs/2012_august/23 For those who are not members, YouTube offers many videos such as:

April Challenge

This month, our challenge was to add interest to our turnings through the use of laminations.

Our members brought pieces that were small to large, two and three individual pieces to over 300 pieces of wood laminated together prior to turning.  Well done group.

 February Challenge

To increase the individuality of our turnings, Deb Mcleod has challenged us to look at nature to find our next project.  Turn a flower shaped vessel or look to the skies for your inspiration and paint a platter like a nebuli.  There are  sources of inspiration everywhere.

2012 Challenges

 January

Our challenge for the January 12th meeting is to complete a screwdriver (kits provided) in one of two categories: Fun or Functional.  Using the Functional framework, you need only to turn a handle and insert the shank into your handle.  On the otherhand, you could create a Fun entry and create a non-functional screwdriver using unique woods or offset turning for example.
